Buying a firearm in Pakistan starts with the licence, not the firearm. This guide explains the general steps. It is general information, not legal advice — rules differ between authorities and change over time.
1. The licence comes first
You need a valid arms licence before you can buy a firearm. Licences are issued by government authorities — the federal Ministry of Interior or a provincial Home Department — not by dealers. Licences issued by a province are generally valid within that province, while federally issued licences have wider validity; check the conditions printed on yours.
2. Check the category and calibre
Firearms are broadly divided into prohibited bore and non-prohibited bore categories, and a licence covers a particular category and type of weapon. Before you choose a firearm, confirm that your licence covers it. If you are unsure, bring your licence and ask us.
3. Bring your documents
When you buy, bring:
- your original CNIC, and
- your original arms licence.
We check both before any transfer.
4. The purchase is recorded
The firearm you buy is entered against your licence as the licence requires. Keep your receipt and make sure the weapon's details are recorded correctly before you leave.
5. Ammunition
Ammunition is sold for the calibre on your licence and within the limits it sets.
6. Carrying and storing
A licence to keep a firearm is not automatically a licence to carry it everywhere. Restrictions on carrying in public — including temporary bans — apply. At home, store firearms securely and out of reach of children.
Where to confirm
For authoritative guidance, contact the authority that issued your licence, your provincial Home Department or a qualified lawyer.
