Caring for your firearm: cleaning, storage and safety

Simple habits that keep a firearm reliable and your home safe.

A firearm that is cleaned and stored properly is safer and more reliable. These are general good practices; always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your model.

The basic safety rules

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
  2. Never point it at anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

Cleaning

  • Unload first. Remove the magazine, clear the chamber, and check twice — visually and physically.
  • Work in a well-lit, ventilated place, with ammunition kept in another room.
  • Clean the bore with a rod, the right size of patch and a suitable solvent until patches come out clean.
  • Clean the action — slide, frame rails and breech face — removing carbon and old oil.
  • Lubricate lightly. A thin film on wear points is enough; too much oil attracts dirt.
  • Function-check the firearm after reassembly.

Clean after shooting, and every few weeks for firearms kept in storage, especially in damp weather.

Storage

  • Keep firearms locked, ideally in a safe or lockable cabinet.
  • Store ammunition separately.
  • Keep keys and combinations away from children.
  • Never leave a firearm unattended in a vehicle.

When to see a gunsmith

If a firearm misfires, fails to feed or eject, or shows cracks or unusual wear, stop using it and have it inspected.
